The D17 Staggerwing US biplane was originally designed for business executives but was also used for air racing and even by the military. The original Model 17 was first flown in November 1932 and in the mid-1930s a major redesign of the aircraft, featuring a longer fuselage and improved handling characteristics, was first flown, designated the D17.

The D17 has a distinctive and unusual staggered biplane configuration with the upper wing offset from the lower wing. The complex aircraft construction consists of a combination of fabric, wood and steel tubing. Production of the D17 finished in 1945 with over 500 having been built.
