Aeroplane Heaven North American B-25J Mitchell with FREE 'Doolittle Raider' B-25B

The North American B-25 Mitchell is a twin-engine, mid-wing, military combat monoplane developed and manufactured by American aviation company North American Aviation.The aircraft is renowned as one of the most successful bombers flown by the US Army Air Corps (which would become the US Army Air Forces in 1941, which in turn would become the US Air Force in 1947). It took its maiden flight in 1940 and saw combat in all theatres of the Second World War.

The B-25J was armed with up to sixteen 50-calibre Browning machine guns and could carry up to 3,000lb of bombs. Pilots reported that the machine was easy to fly with little to no vices and was an extremely rugged and agile performer under battle conditions. The B-25J model was the most common of all the versions, with almost 5,000 built in various forms. One major modification was where the glazed nose of the airframe was replaced by a solid nose, housing eight Browning 50 cal. machine guns. This version became one of WWII's most effective ground-attack machines. Four additional pods, each housing a 50 cal. machine gun, could be attached to the sides of the airframe to further increase the armament which, together with the upper turret and tail guns, gave some B-25Js a total of 14 to 16 machine guns. 

Adorned with colourful and often risque nose art, the B-25J Mitchell served in all the theatres of World War 2 with the USAAC and US Marines. Many B-25s were delivered to other air forces. The RAF received over 900, renamed by the British and called the Mitchell III. 862 were delivered to the Soviet Air Force under lend-lease. Other air forces to use the B-25 included the Royal Australian Air Force, the Royal Canadian Air Force, the Dutch Air Force (in exile) and the post-war Indonesian Air Force. Many examples remain airworthy, or are under restoration, and the B-25 is a popular sight at airshows all over the world.

The B-25J Mitchell measures 52 feet, 11 inches in length, stands 16 feet 4 inches in height, and has a wingspan of 67 feet 7 inches. The airframe is powered by two Wright 14-cylinder radial engines developing 1,700 hp each which turn three-blade metal constant-speed propellers of 12 feet 4 inches in diameter. A B-25J has a maximum range of 1,350 miles, a service ceiling of 24,200 feet above sea level and a maximum speed of 272 miles per hour. It carries a crew of up to six.
