FLYING CHARACTERISTICS


The SSW Harrier is a not conventional model; it can be considered both a wing-borne and a jet-borne aircraft model since it can take off and land using wing-lift or using engine nozzle vectored thrust.

To implement such unconventional characteristics was a challenge but we believe we have obtained behaviour very close to the real aircraft, as witnessed by real-world pilots and former Harrier pilots.

Transition flight from jet-borne to wing-borne and vice versa is surprisingly smooth, and all typical vertical or short types of take-off and landings can be performed with a very high degree of realism

SSW Drag coefficient concept implementation:

FSX has several known limitations, one of which is that a model is not expected to be able to change its shape during the flight (except for flap surfaces etc.), then there is no possibility of dynamically changing the drag coefficent. The static drag coefficient is stored either on an .air or aircraft.cfg file that is read once when the model is loaded into memory and cannot be changed easily, or at least in a documented way. SSW has developed a C/C++ .dll module that over-rides this limitations, and from now on our models will have a single .air and a single aircraft.cfg, changing configuration in flight, i.e. dropping weapons and tanks will affect not only the weight, which is already possible, but also the drag coefficient. Since the module behaviour can be easily customised it is also applicable to any type of model - another step towards achieving the maximum realism possible.


WING-BORNE CHARACTERISTICS

Flight characteristics have been accurately reproduced for almost all flight conditions; conventional take-off, climb, cruise, combat, descent and landing are very close to flight tests and performances tables. The model has, like in the real plane, the SAAHS (Stability Augmentations And Holding System) that greatly enhances manoeuvrability and departure resistance.
Flaps are handled by a computer-controlled schedule and no flap lever is provided; like in the real aircraft, the user can choose from three flap operation modes: CRUISE, AUTO and STO.

The RR 408 engine combat trust and JPT control have been reproduced.
 

JET-BORNE CHARACTERISTICS

All aspects of Harrier vectored thrust flight have been reproduced with a high grade of realism:

  • Water injection control, wet/dry RR 408 engine
  • Ground effect
  • Wind effect
  • LIDS (Lift Improvement Device System)
  • Side-slip acceleration with RPS (Rudder Pedal Shaker) - a system to warn the pilot of a side-slip condition
  • Computed and displayed hover weight based on air temperature, altitude and gross weight, therefore computed fuel quantity is permissible on board
  • Computed and displayed STO parameters, nozzle STO stop angle, STO nozzle rotation speed, ground roll, etc.
  • To enhance the real feeling, some random perturbations are injected on the three axes during the hover.
All of above systems assure an high degree of realism and great smoothness in the transition from jet-borne to wing-borne flight and vice versa.

  • 4GB RAM (8GB recommended)
  • GPU: nVidia with at least 2GB of RAM, DX10/11 compatible. Other GPUs such as AMD Radeon are known to work correctly but are not supported by SSW.
  • Windows 7 and later (Windows 10 version 17003 build 15063.540) or later recommended
  • vACMI must be installed (free download)
We cannot guarantee that our models works perfectly on Mac models when run in Windows dual boot even if we have positive experiences on this. In any case will we do our best to support Mac users.
