Originally named Lydd Ferryfield, Lydd or London Ashford, the airport was originally opened in 1954 on the cuspate foreland known as Dungeness, one of the UK's largest areas of shingle and a nature reserve and site of special scientific interest.

Although recently given permission for the construction of a  runway extension and new terminal, this scenery represents the airport as it has been for the last decade. Only one carrier is based at the airport, 'Lydd Air' which offers flights to Le Touquet and champagne flight tours of the nearby Romney marsh and White Cliffs.
